Calling all Volunteers!

The 2013 Volunteer Leadership Conference, jointly sponsored by the Delaware Credit Union League and the Maryland and DC Credit Union Association, will be held on October 25-27 at The Clarion Hotel in Ocean City, MD. DCUL and MDCCUA are offering special early bird pricing of $350 to New Jersey credit unions.

This year's conference is packed with fascinating and important sessions that you will not want to miss. Here is a sampling:

Hearts of Courage - John Tippets, Opening Keynoter
From Seattle, WA on New Year's Eve, December 1942, Joseph Tippets wrote to his wife, Alta, in Anchorage, Alaska, his letter concluding "...Godspeed our quick reunion and I hope I beat this letter to you! " That was not to be the case.

Hearts of Courage brings to life the amazing true account of the 1943 Gillam plane crash in the wilderness of southeast Alaska. It was a month of enduring sub zero temperatures and with little food, until an ultimate dramatic rescue. Using historical photographs and numerous other illustrations, along with his father's first-hand descriptions, John Tippets' presentation is a source of inspiration to all who hear it.

Horror Stories from the Board Room - David Reed, Reed and Jolly, PLLC
Did you ever hear about the Board member who only attended one meeting a year?  How about the Board Chair who hired his construction company to build a branch without taking other bids? Join credit union attorney David Reed as he takes advantage of his years of experience as both inside counsel and outside counsel for credit unions to discuss the current state of credit union governance and how to avoid some of the most common landmines.

Other topical sessions include: Cyber Liability/Data Security; Recruiting New Board Members; NCUA Hot Topics; The Top 10 Questions Board Members Should Be Asking Right Now; Ask the Attorney; Supervisory Committee Loan Review; Bank Secrecy Act Training; and Sharing CU Successes/Networking.

Gigi Hyland, Executive Director of the National Credit Union Foundation will close out the conference with a presentation on "Doing Well By Doing Good: The Untapped Opportunities For Credit Unions".
