POMPTON LAKES, N.J. - On Friday, November 12, New Jersey credit unions brought the first-ever Financial Reality Fair to Pompton Lakes High School as part of the REAL Solutions initiative. Eighteen volunteers from throughout New Jersey spent the day at the high school manning booths and interacting with over 80 students, providing them a hands-on experience completing a monthly budget.
Two financial literacy teachers brought their freshman classes to the school library to take part in the Reality Fair. A total of five classes comprised of 85 students took part in the all-day event. Over the course of a 40-minute period, each class visited the 13 booths and the spinning the Wheel of Reality. Students went through the experience of financing cars and furniture, figuring out living situations, and sometimes making some extravagant purchases along the way.
Financial Counselors took time with each student at the end of the period, going over the students' monthly expenses and one-time purchases, offering advice and guidance. All of the students enjoyed the hands-on, interactive experience of putting their financial literacy skills to the test.
New Jersey credit unions will be hosting a Reality Fair on Tuesday, November 16, at Carteret High School in Carteret, N.J. The Reality Fair team would like to thank everyone for their help in making sure these fairs are a success. Special thanks to ABCO FCU, First Jersey FCU, Garden Savings FCU, MidState FCU and the New Jersey Credit Union Foundation and National Credit Union Foundation for making these events possible through direct contributions, fundraising and grants.
