Booker Delivers Electrifying Keynote Address at CO-OP Financial Services “Disrupt Business As Usual” THINK Conference in Chicago

CHICAGO – Cory Booker, Mayor of Newark, N.J., a national advocate of urban revitalization, and a prospective U.S. Senate candidate in 2014, delivered a powerful speech at the annual CO-OP Financial Services THINK conference this week. Booker reminded the audience to refuse to surrender to the circumstances of current reality and asked them change the world for the better. He said if you have compelling values, the stubbornness, and the willing to sacrifice, you can change the world.

First elected in July 2006, Mayor Booker has marshaled resources and empowered people in creative ways to uplift his city. Together with the city’s residents, Mayor Booker and his administration have made meaningful strides towards tackling significant governance challenges with innovation, new coalitions, creative public private partnerships and building on the already existing foundation in New Jersey’s largest city.

Booker provided an entertaining and insightful tour de force through his life, the values his parents instilled in him, the environment he grew up in, and what it taught him: The world outside of you is the reflection of the world inside of you. It’s in you to see hope and opportunity every time you open your eyes. Don’t just accept reality as a fact, discover what reality could be. Don’t give in to the oppressing reality of now, give in to the power of hope and love.
By bringing people together we can manifest the power of people, the collective imagination and minds of people. If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.

Representing New Jersey at the THINK 13 Conference was Mike Sullivan, EVP/Chief Operating Officer at McGraw-Hill FCU; Amar Shah, Senior VP of Operations at Mc-Graw Hill FCU; Tom O’Shea, President/CEO of Aspire FCU; and John Hendery, Business Consultant at NJCUL. Mayor Booker has shown support for New Jersey credit unions in the past, attending a Chapter Meeting and appearing at Garden Savings FCU’s golf outing.

The annual THINK conference sponsored by CO-OP Financial Services specializes in bringing in world-class thought-leaders from widely divergent fields to provide insights and fresh approaches to issues facing the credit union movement.
