Lending/Collector Competencies


Level 1:
Frontline Tellers and MSRs


Level 1 Employees are usually tellers and MSRs who take applications and need enough knowledge to demonstrate competence when answering members' inquiries and be able to refer the member to the appropriate area when more expertise is needed.

While there are no "required" trainings by the regulators, the following areas are necessary to be competent in one's position and be recognized for future growth within the industry: Product Knowledge, including knowing what questions to ask; Basic Lending Policies; Cross-Selling Skills; Truth in Lending (Reg Z); and BSA Training for Lenders.

Level 2:
Loan Processors and Staff who Perform Basic Work on Loan Applications/Documentation


Level 2 Employees require the knowledge and skills to perform basic work on loan applications (credit checks, reference checks, etc.) as well as function as a loan processor.

These employees need all skills of a Level 1 Employee in addition to Reading Credit Reports and Understanding Credit Scores.

Level 3:
Collections Staff


Level 3 Employees include the Collections Staff. These employees need a basic understanding of all lending policies and regulations, and a greater knowledge and skill set to allow them to work on Loan Modifications and deal with foreclosure and bankruptcy with an understanding of the legal issues in the collections process.

Level 4:
Decision-makers: Loan Officers, Underwriters


Level 4 Employees are the Decision-makers: Loan Officers, Underwriters. These employees need an in-depth knowledge of all lending functions and regulations and all requirements of Level 1 and Level 2 in addition to the following areas: Approval Guidelines, Conditioning a Loan, how to work with problem loans, and handling allowance for loan losses.
