JAMESBURG, N.J. – The final meeting of the New Jersey Director and Volunteer Networking Alliance (NJ DNA) group was held at the Forsgate Country Club in Jamesburg, N.J. on Wednesday, December 30, 2011.

Kicking off the meeting, League Director of Education and Training Barbara Agin welcomed the guests, discussing the dates for the 2012 NJ DNA dinners and talking about the value of the Reality Check Conference being held February 27-29, 2012 at Harrah’s Casino Resort in Atlantic City, N.J.

The large gathering of credit union directors and volunteers hears from attorneys Drew Edwards (back left) and Stephen Edwards (back right).

Just before dinner was served, Agin asked for topic suggestions for the 2012 meetings. The group mentioned the following areas of interest: fraud prevention, recruiting volunteers, being proactive with member growth and awareness (keeping the momentum of Bank Transfer Day going), getting youth to join and stay with the credit union, financial literacy for volunteers (NCUA’s new requirement) and financial literacy for schools, comparing/contrasting bank vs. credit union products, increasing loan growth, and social media.

Drew Edwards discusses NCUA's new standards for directors.

The evening’s speakers were credit union attorneys Stephen and Drew Edwards from the law firm Edwards & Edwards. Drew introduced the topic “Duties of Directors and Indemnification of Directors and Employees”. He explained that the topic pertains to being "protected" as volunteers. The purpose of the topic is to ensure that volunteers understand what their responsibilities are and how they are looked at differently than volunteers at a paid financial institution.

Both speakers discussed the value of an indemnification policy and suggested that volunteers check if their credit union has one. The presentation was very thorough and provoked good questions from the group throughout and afterwards.
