HANOVER PARK, N.J. – In true cooperative spirit, Garden Savings FCU, Novartis FCU, and XCEL FCU joined forces to co-sponsor a Financial Reality Fair for personal finance students at Hanover Park High School on Wednesday.

Around 20 credit union volunteers manned the booths at the Fair, held in the high school’s large gymnasium. A total of eight personal finance classes, totaling around 300 students, went through the Fair over the course of the school day.

Students were given an orientation by their teachers the day before the Fair and were prepared to put their personal finance skills learned in the classroom to the test when going through this hands-on “game of life”. Manned with their budget worksheets, a padfolio, pencil, and calculator provided by the Reality Fair program, the students stopped by the various booths to purchase cars, rent apartments, buy furniture, and more. Many were tempted by the “entertainment” booth that offered electronics, pets, travel options, and concert/game tickets.
The teachers asked the students to bring their budget worksheets to class the next day so they could go over what they learned.
Garden Savings FCU, Novartis FCU, and XCEL FCU also teamed up to co-sponsor a Reality Fair for Whippany Park High School on Thursday, May 23rd from 7:00 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. To sign up to volunteer, send an email to Mike Powers at Mpowers@gardensavingsfcu.com.
