MADISON, Wis. – As you may have seen, the Internet Corporation for Names and Numbers (ICANN) recently gave CUNA preliminary approval for the “.credit union” (dot credit union) top-level Internet domain extension. The “.creditunion” extension is one of several thousand that ICANN has under consideration. As more extensions are approved, the Internet landscape is likely to change so that consumers become more comfortable using extensions other than “.com” and “.org” that are so prevalent today. That is the reason CUNA, with assistance from CUNA Mutual and CO-OP Financial Services, applied for “.creditunion”.
Other financial services categories like “.bank” and “.insure” are in the pipeline, and CUNA doesn’t want credit unions to be left behind. Having control of its own domain name will give the CU system marketing and Internet security advantages, and avoid the potential for abuse if it were in the wrong hands.
CUNA is surveying credit unions to gauge their interest in using the extension. The responses will help CUNA’s efforts as it plans a rollout in early 2014.
The survey will only take a few minutes to complete, and does not commit the credit union in any way to using “.creditunion”. Please take a few minutes to complete this survey at the following link: www.cuna.org/Stay-Informed/CUNA-Initiatives/CREDITUNION-TOP-LEVEL-DOMAIN-INFORMATION/.
