The National Credit Union Foundation has activated the online disaster relief system to raise money for credit union employees, members and volunteers along the East Coast affected by Hurricane Irene.

CUAid will provide $500 to $2,000 grants to fund insurance deductibles and items not covered by insurance or federal aid. These grants will be provided on an availability basis, depending on how much money is collected for the Hurricane Irene fund.

A letter and application form can be found on our Web site at The letter should be reviewed by the credit union and anyone interested in applying for aid, must complete the application.

Application forms must be verified, collated by credit union employee, member and volunteer, and then ranked in priority of need by the credit union. Once complete the forms need to be supplied to the New Jersey Credit Union League for further priority and ranking with other participating credit union applications from New Jersey.

Once the applications are collated with the rest of New Jersey, the NJCUL will send the applications to the National Credit Union Foundation who will make decisions based on the available funds.

Some tips provided by the National Foundation include the following:

  • Gather evidence of non-coverage, photos of damage, evidence of damage, etc. from applicants
  • Gather any necessary documentation that will keep this from being a taxable event for the applicant
  • Any home damage must be to a primary residence, not a vacation home
  • Be diligent in determining the legitimacy and need for each applicant
  • Don't make promises of funding, CUAid does not guarantee funds

Prioritized and collated applications must be received by the New Jersey Credit Union League by October 7, 2011. These applications should be provided via mail to 299 Ward Street, Hightstown, NJ 08520 or email to Candice Nigro at Wherever possible original documents or scans of original documents should be provided.

For questions regarding this process or CUAid, please contact Candice Nigro at or 609-448-2426 ext. 110.
