Advertising Cooperative
Across the country, many state leagues have organized advertising
cooperatives for their credit union movements. States like Pennsylvania,
Arizona, and California have all had great success with statewide
advertising cooperatives. Now credit unions in New Jersey have
the opportunity to become part of just such an educational campaign
and with your help, New Jersey can become a rising star for credit
union awareness!
From a nation wide advertising perspective,
New Jersey is in awkward position. We are situated between
two of the nations largest advertising markets, New York in
the North, and Philadelphia to the South. The television and
radio markets in Philadelphia and New York are referred to
as "top five" markets by advertising
professions. "Top five" refers to the
placement of these markets on a national scale. Needless to say,
these markets are priced according to their ranking, so "top
five" translates to some of the most
expensive advertising in the nation.
Coupled with this fact, a large portion of the American population
simply isn't aware of what a credit union is and what kind of
service they can provide an individual ( according to a 2003
study by the National Cooperative Business Association (NCBA)
and the Consumer Federation of America).
With these particulars in mind, NJCUL created the NJCUL Advertising
Cooperative for the benefit of the New Jersey credit union movement.
Commit your credit union!
The Committee is currently made up of 47 credit unions. The
immediate goal is to continue committee recruitment and fundraising
efforts. In order to saturate the state of New Jersey with mass
media tactics, we need to involve more credit unions and raise
the level of funds.
This educational cooperative advertising effort effects every
credit union in our state including business partners in the
movement. As the general knowledge of credit unions increases
through educational promotions in the mass media, so does the
quality and quantity of all of our future members.
This "sum" of effort certainly is much greater than everyone's
individual "parts." By pooling financial
resources, we can truly make a difference in credit union awareness
in New Jersey.
Participating in the NJCUL Advertising Cooperative will give
every credit union of every asset size a much better return on
their investment, as the overall cooperative budget is greater
and gives all credit unions more bang for their buck!
How can you contribute?
Because New Jersey's credit unions come in a variety of asset
sizes, and each credit union's advertising budget varies, each
credit union is capable of contributing on different levels,
however we will accept any amount available for the cause. Likewise,
any larger contributions are greatly appreciated.

Professional/Volunteer Development Advisory Committee
Since no one can better understand the skill needs
of staff members better than they themselves, the New Jersey
Credit Union League has created the Professional/Volunteerl Development
Advisory Group to help chart the direction of its education,
training and networking capabilities.
Founded on the premise that training is most effective
when driven by clearly defined needs and objectives, the Professional/Volunteerl
Development Advisory Committee will influence how training is
developed and delivered throughout New Jersey.
Based on the advisory group's feedback, we have
diversified course offerings to include such areas as: management
and supervisory skills, communication and interpersonal skills,
pre-sales culture, adapting to change, credit union orientation
and subjects designed especially for small credit unions. Started
in the spring/'summer of 2002 and expanding from here on out,
multiple training sites will be located in the North, Central
and South for added convenience. Consult the education
calendar for more details.. Educational opportunities are
also listed monthly in the Exchange newsletter.

The Small Credit Union Committee functions under the very capable leadership of Thomas R. Cooke, Jr., Chairman, and Virginia F. Williams, Vice-Chairman. Tom Cooke has focused the Committee’s efforts on strengthening educational opportunities and ongoing assistance to small credit unions with special needs.
Helping small credit unions take advantage of quality education and training continues to be an ongoing priority. For small credit unions whose limited staff makes it virtually impossible to attend formal training, education has taken the form of on-site help. Committee members have assisted with internal operational assessments to help management and staffs benefit from a different perspective and a sense of objectivity. Information and coaching were provided in the areas of: Board consultations, bank reconciliation, data processing training, and availability of compliance information and policies.
Other than the help in mentoring small credit unions, the Educational Financial Assistance Program continues to meet the needs of the smaller organizations. In 2005, the qualifying standards were expanded to include any League-approved education, equipment or operational resource such as the Annual Meeting, workshops, computers, software and other technical materials. The amount of scholarship grant was also increased from $200 per year to a maximum of $500 for credit unions with $10 million and less in assets. Sale of the Entertainment Book was added to the continuing offering of the original “Credit Union Family Recipes” cookbook to boost fundraising efforts.
The Small Credit Union Committee is very proud of the commitment by its members and of the outstanding accomplishments for 2005. The Committee remains deeply committed to serving the needs of small credit unions, going forward.
As one of its initiatives in 2006, the League and Small Credit Union Committee will co-sponsor regional panel discussions on issues of critical importance to credit unions of $20 million assets and below.

The Youth Involvement Board is excited to announce our 2006-2007 scholarship award recipients! This year, the YIB received over 250 applications and had 36 participating credit unions. Although all the applicants were very worthy students, the YIB had to make the difficult decision of selecting the best.
