CEO of the Year

The Award
The CEO of the Year Award is a recent addition to NJCUL's awards program designed to recognize outstanding achievement among New Jersey credit union CEOs. Factors considered, but not limited to, in deciding the winner include the following:
• Visionary leadership that has led to improved performance of the credit union,
• New products, services, procedures and overall innovations that have helped improve the credit union and/or service to members,
• Commitment to the credit union movement in New Jersey,
• Commitment to the credit union’s local community.

Note
Applicants should submit a narrative (no longer than 2,500 words) highlighting achievements. Applicants must submit statistical information, supporting documents and any documentation of special programs, recognition in community, etc.

Volunteer of the Year

The Award
The Volunteer of the Year Award is a recent addition to NJCUL's awards program designed to recognize outstanding dedication among New Jersey credit union board members. Factors considered, but not limited to, in deciding the winner include the following:
• Outstanding work as a volunteer board member,
• Assisted in increasing awareness of the credit union in the community,
• Commitment to the credit union movement in New Jersey,
• Commitment to the credit union’s local community.

Note
Applicants should submit a narrative (no longer than 2,500 words) highlighting achievements. Applicants must submit statistical information, supporting documents and any documentation of special programs, recognition in community, etc.

NJCUL Web Site Award

Entry Form

The NJCUL Web site Award is one of the newest categories in the New Jersey Credit Union League’s Awards Program. It is important to get information to your credit union members in a timely fashion. More and more credit unions are offering online tools to their members and in keeping with the times, the New Jersey Credit Union League would like to recognize those credit unions’ efforts.

Eligibility and Rules
All affiliated credit unions with a Web site are eligible. Each entry will be judged on ease of navigation, overall look and usefulness.

Categories
Awards will be given in the following asset categories:
•Less than $5 million in assets
•$5 - $25 million in assets
•$25 million and up in assets

Alexander S. Kosobucki Promotion Award

Entry Form

The Award
This award provides recognition for an outstanding promotion generated from within the credit union. A certificate of winning achievement is awarded to the first-place credit union in each asset category.

Purpose
To recognize an excellent example of a credit union promoting itself and/or its services to members.

Eligibility and Rules
All affiliated credit unions are eligible. The promotion must have originated from within the credit union and must have occurred between June 1, 2008 and May 31, 2009. Credit unions should send copies of all information regarding the promotion and explain how it benefited the credit union and achived the desired result.

Categories
Awards will be given in the following asset categories:
•Less than $5 million in assets
•$5 - $25 million in assets
•$25 million and up in assets

Catherine L. Miller Newsletter Award

Entry Form

The Award
The Catherine L. Miller Newsletter Award is a certificate of winning achivement to the first-place credit union in each category. It offers recognition for a newsletter which brings concise and timely information to members in a professional format. All ideas must have been developed within the credit union.

Purpose
To inspire and reinforce excellence in communications in credit union member newsletters.

Eligibility and Rules
All affiliated credit unions are eligible. Ideas must have originated from within the credit union. Entries must have been published between June 1, 2008 and May 31, 2009. Credit unions must submit two copies of two consecutive issues of their credit union newsletter.

Categories
Awards will be given in the following asset categories:
•Less than $5 million in assets
•$5 - $25 million in assets
•$25 million and up in asset

Scholarship Award

Entry Form

Purpose
The Scholarship Program provides a stipend for training present and future leaders of credit unions. The awards will not exceed $1,000. Multiple scholarships are available to officials and employees of New Jersey Credit Union League member credit unions.

Eligibility
Officials are members of Boards, Credit and Supervisory Committees. Employees are defined as a “main operation person or member of office staff.” This could include volunteers. In evaluating Scholarship Applications, emphasis will be placed on applicants having attended and participated in Chapter and NJCUL Education Programs. The scholarship(s) are to be confined to use for attendance at any of the following:
•NJCUL Education Programs held at the Education and Training Center
•NJCUL Leadership Conference
•NJCUL Annual Meeting & Convention

Frequently Asked Questions

Purpose
To formally recognize the leadership of individual credit unions and chapters (or groups of credit unions) on behalf of youth financial education.


Categories
Judges will evaluate state-level credit union winners from each of the following five categories (assets as of 12/31/08):

  • Chapters or credit union groups
    (all asset sizes)
  • Credit unions with less than $35 million in assets
  • Credit unions with between $35 million and $75 million in assets
  • Credit unions with between $75 million and $250 million in assets
  • Credit unions with more than $250 million in assets

Procedure
Credit unions and chapters will submit their completed Entry Forms, Checklists, and evidentiary materials in a three-ring binder or spiral bound notebook for state-level judging to their leagues by the date each league specifies. Check with your league for its state-level judging deadline.
Be sure to consult "Secrets of a Winning Credit Union Entry" before compiling your submission.


2009 Program Timetable
JANUARY 2009: CUNA begins publicity for 2009 recognition program, loads entry information on CUNA's web site.

JANUARY 2009 through AUGUST 2009: CUNA and leagues make award information available online.

SEPTEMBER 4, 2009: League entries due to CUNA.

OCTOBER 2009: National judging.

OCTOBER 2009: CUNA announces national winners.

NOVEMBER 2009: CUNA returns nonwinning entries to leagues.

FEBRUARY 2010: CUNA displays winning national entries at the Governmental Affairs Conference and presents national awards at a private reception there.

To promote social responsibility among credit unions by formally recognizing their social achievements.

Procedure
Prior to judging, ensure you verify the credit union’s asset size. Each league will select winners from each of the following categories:

  1. Less than $5 million in assets
  2. $5 - $20 million in assets
  3. $20 - $50 million in assets
  4. $50 - $100 million in assets
  5. $100 - $200 million in assets
  6. $200 - $500 million in assets
  7. $500 million or more in assets
  8. Credit union chapter/multiple credit union group

Only the first place winner in each category will advance to the national competition. If more than one has been chosen, please send just one for judging at the national level. If more than one entry per asset size category is submitted for national judging, the entries will be sent back to the league to determine one winner.

Eligible Activities
Credit unions could receive an award for involvement in almost any kind of activity that helps other people or strengthens the structure of a community. This might include raising funds for charity, educational activities, or community involvement projects, such as a volunteer fair, building low-income housing, or loaning employees a few hours a week to work in hospitals, retirement homes, schools, etc.

Activities should have occurred between June 1, 2008 and May 31, 2009.

The Selection Process
Credit unions will submit their project binder, album or spiral bound book, along with a completed, typed entry form (required). Support materials for the project should be included in the binder, album or book. Please no electronic media. We also strongly recommend that the credit union completes and follows the checklist that is provided.

The League then selects winners in each category and forwards the firt place winners to CUNA & Affiliates.  In the national competition, the CUNA Awards Committee judges the entries.

Procedure
Prior to judging, ensure you verify the credit union’s asset size. Each league will select winners from each of the following categories:

  •  
  • Less than $50 million
  • $50 - $250 million
  • More than $250 million

Only the first place winner in each category will advance to the national competition.

Eligible Activities
Credit unions could receive an award for programs or policies that demonstrate their commitment to the practical application of the "People-Helping-People" philosophy. Some examples of eligible activities are:

  • Provisions for the small saver or borrower.
  • Member programs for groups that are often economically challenged.
  • Internal programs or services that help to differentiate the credit union from other financial services' providers.
  • Programs that do an extraordinary job of encouraging thrift and provide a source of unbiased money management and consumer information, which would be difficult or impossible to obtain elsewhere.
  • Evidence of an exceptional degree of service to members.

Activities should have occurred between June 1, 2008 and May 31, 2009.

The Selection Process
Credit unions will submit to their league a project binder, album, or spiral bound book, along with a completed, typed entry form (required), and 2 years’ (current and previous year - required) balance sheets and income statements and/or NCUA’s Financial Performance Report (FPR). Support materials for the project should be included in the binder, album, or book. Please no electronic media. We also strongly recommend that the credit union completes and follows the checklist that is provided.
