Compliance and Regulatory Affairs

The Compliance Center provides information on state and federal laws, regulations and related issues that affect the day-to-day and long-term operations of credit unions. This includes monitoring the application of existing laws and regulations to credit union activities; reviewing proposed laws and regulations affecting credit union operations; and advocating or commenting to regulatory agencies (NCUA, CUNA, finCEN, FTC, IRS, NJ Department of Banking and Insurance, and other federal and state agencies) on matters of interest affecting credit unions.
The Compliance Center coordinates its regulatory advocacy activities with CUNA and other state leagues to project a single voice on matters of industry-wide significance.
In addition, the Compliance Center also provides compliance and regulatory aid to member credit unions, compliance information in the League's weekly online newsletter, "The Weekly Exchange", and through our League online compliance manual, InfoSight. The Compliance Center also holds roundtables throughout the year and regulatory update sessions in the spring and fall.

Government Affairs
NJCUL's Government Affairs Department coordinates all legislative
and political activities for New Jersey's credit unions, by establishing
effective credit union involvement and participation in the public
policy process.
On behalf of all New Jersey credit unions, we monitor, develop,
and advocate for (and against) legislation in Trenton and Washington,
D.C., to enhance the operations of both state and federally chartered
credit unions.
Additional responsibilities include establishing forums for
credit unions and elected officials to effectively interact,
managing the activities of the state and federal political action
committees (NJCUPAC and CULAC) and enhancing the credit union
community’s knowledge of candidates and participation in elections
throughout the state of New Jersey.
Government Affairs is clearly and distinctly a priority at NJCUL.
To strengthen its government affairs efforts, NJCUL has committed
itself to building an even stronger credit union presence in
the public policy arena. To that end, NJCUL is providing more
opportunities for credit union leaders across the state to become
more familiar with and educate their elected officials in Trenton
and Washington, D.C.

Marketing & Communications
NJCUL publishes a weekly e-newsletter, The Weekly Exchange, which covers all areas of the credit union movement within New Jersey and the country. It also highlights what's new at the League and also what our credit unions are doing. Information pertaining to all areas of the credit union industry is covered.
NJCUL also provides logo creation services at a much lower cost than other marketing firms. If you are interested in this please contact Candice Nigro, director of marketing and communication.

Education & Training

Developing your employee's knowledge and skills is vital to
the future of your credit union. That's why NJCUL and CUNA offer
a wide variety of training opportunities to ensure your credit
union's continued success. From schools, seminars and workshops
to self-study and virtual classroom programs, credit unions have
an assortment of opportunities to enhance the professional level
of their staff and volunteers.
Since no one can better understand the skill needs of staff
members better than they themselves, the New Jersey Credit Union
League has created the Professional Development Advisory Group
to help chart the direction of its education, training and networking
capabilities.
Founded on the premise that training is most effective when
driven by clearly defined needs and objectives, the Professional
Development Advisory Committee will influence how training
is developed and delivered throughout New Jersey.
Based on the advisory group's feedback, we have diversified
course offerings to include such areas as: management and supervisory
skills, communication and interpersonal skills, pre-sales culture,
adapting to change, credit union orientation and subjects designed
especially for small credit unions. Started in the spring/'summer
of 2002 and expanding from here on out, multiple training sites
will be located in the North, Central and South for added convenience.
Consult the education
calendar for more details.. Educational opportunities are
also listed monthly in the Exchange newsletter.
In addition, NJCUL and CUNA offer national and local workshops
on topics of special interest, geared toward credit union management,
staff, and volunteers. NJCUL also issues education scholarships
that are available through the annual Awards Program at the annual
convention.

Strategic Planning Services
Strategic Planning is a process where Board members dedicate
time, separate and apart from regular meetings, to discuss the
future of their credit union within the context of the current
economy, market competition, and trends in the financial services
industry. Since Board members are encouraged to discuss ways
that they can better serve their members and maintain healthy
growth, strategic planning is one of the best things that a Board
can do for its credit union.
Even though some benefits are universal, each credit union derives
its own value depending upon its unique situation. Strategic
planning enables a credit union to identify specific objectives,
goals, and strategies to maintain growth and manage risk going
forward. It helps credit unions understand their particular strengths
and specific core values, distinguishing one organization from
the rest. By knowing what direction the credit union is taking
all products, policies, and processes can be aligned to support
that direction. It helps Board members have a better understanding
of their roles and responsibilities, and encourages better communication
among Board members.
